Many Christians who previously had worldly influences in their lives have experienced transformative journeys inspired mainly by the prompting of the Holy Spirit. For music, there’s usually a switch regarding listening to songs that edify and quitting songs used to promote desires of the flesh. Transformation happens at different times for different people, but common pivotal events we all may experience whenever transformation comes as regards to gospel music include;

● The “lukewarm stage“: At this stage, transitioning listeners attempt to balance their faith with external non-religious influence, selectively choosing music that does not “entirely” conflict with their beliefs. You get justified responses like “maintaining spiritual patterns over secular consumption is all that matters”. We’re not judging, but let’s recap on what John, the apostle, highlighted in Revelations 3:16: “So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” Choose a side but stick to the cross.

● Discovering new Christian artists and falling in love with the versatility: It takes a few curious moments to uncover the hidden gems (Christian artists) in niche spaces that resonate with your soul. Automatically, you’re drawn to the versatility of their music, which spans across Afro-beats, Indie, R&B, Pop, and other beautiful genres that foster diversity. You start to appreciate how these artists cater to different preferences. The more you explore, the more you discover new artists who uplift and inspire you with their unique style and message.

● Hearing that your once-favourite “non- gospel artist" released a new song: You’re scrolling through social media, and there’s a buzz about a new song by your once-favourite artist. Everyone’s vibing to the beat, and you’re tempted to listen. But you’ve been convicted, and your new faith and identity is now a priority. You cannot afford to take a step backwards, risking turning to a pillar of salt (side eyes). There’s a new chapter, and you’re determined to stay focused on your spiritual journey and this new conviction wins out. Resist temptation, choose to stick to the newness of your faith.

● Consider how your new music preference shift would affect your relationships and social circles: in this stage, there’s speculation going round your family, social circles, etc. Some people might not understand or resonate with your new preferences, and you might face criticism, mockery, or even get labelled as a hypocrite. However, you must be reminded of what the Bible pointed out in Matthew 5:10: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for they shall inherit God’s Kingdom.” This conviction gives you the strength to be committed to your new path and stand firm by your faith and values, even if it means standing alone.

● Understanding the conviction and feeling liberated from old influences that no longer align: It will initially seem puzzling as to why God is guiding you away from certain things, but over time, you start to appreciate the separation. You begin to bask in the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the sense of peace that surpasses all understanding sets in, as described by Apostle Paul in Philippians 4:7.  This peace leads you to a place of understanding why you were set apart. You discover new artists and perfect songs that resonate with your spirit's demands. You’re now liberated, no longer lost, but found.

● Learning how to discern what aligns with your values and abstaining from influences that disrupt your faith: as you grow in faith, you make more intentional choices coupled with the discernment of the Holy Spirit. You now aspire to listen to only songs that uplift and edify, focusing on themes that promote hope, redemption, worship and positivity. This approach enables you to flourish on your spiritual journey and helps you stay grounded on what’s truly important.

● Finding a community: Nothing beats knowing you’re not odd or different. The feeling of finding a community that shares your interest and passion for gospel music and faith in God is unmatched. No shame, condemnation or arguments, just a pure feeling of acceptance and unity. Together you worship, learn, and grow united in spirit and heart. This community becomes a source of encouragement, support and a source of accountability to your faith and values.
