The 90s - a time when music was real, raw and unapologetically awesome! Sure, sometimes, 90s kids are marked out to be clueless about trends, but honestly, an emergence of trends that continue to influence the world today broke forth from that era. The music then had a distinct and authentic style that spoke to a whole generation.

The 90s saw the rise of new sounds that helped shape the genre into what it is today. So, if you’re a 90s kid, let’s get nostalgic and chant along. And If you’re not, no worries, it’s time to learn at least one new song and vibe with us.

“Awesome God” by Rich Mullins

This is a masterpiece written in 1988 that continues to uplift and inspire till this day.  This timeless classic has stood the test of time and is now a testament of the power of music to transcend time and touch hearts. Its enduring popularity has made it a staple in many churches and quite a number tag it as “the best song ever made”. What would you tag it ?


“Shout to the Lord” by Darlene Zschech  (former worship pastor at Hillsong Church)

This is indeed an iconic and timeless worship song that has left an indelible mark on the Christian community worldwide. A song that sparks beautiful childhood memories for many, serves as a perfect companion for others on their faith journey,  and ignites the worship potential within those ordained as gospel ministers. “Shout to the Lord” has made a global impact over the years and has been translated into many languages, inspiring people from diverse backgrounds and culture to worship God.

“He Has Made Me Glad” by Maranatha Singers and praise band

Written in 1997, this is a top hit that a lot of 90s Christian kids can relate to. For the 90s African kids, it grew to be a daily staple devotional song. Though re-tuned with little twists, touch of the African culture and clap gestures, this song brings back a lot of nostalgic memories. A song drawn from Psalms 100:4 , a joyful celebration of faith and redemption.

“As The Deer” by Maranatha Singers.

A 90s kid must-know, and an all-round Christian kid favorite, rooted in Psalms 42: 1 & 2 NIV - As the deer pants for streams of water,so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. This track evokes fond and blessed memories for many emphasizing the importance of seeking God. The striking comparison and imagery  of a thirsty deer in search of water to convey a message of deep longing of a soul for God is simply beautiful.

“When the Spirit of the Lord” by Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ

This track is a high-energy praise song that has caused many to recreate a notable dance-off in the Bible and dance with abandon just as our famous King David did in 2nd Samuel 6: 14 & 15. Even after 29 years, this song serves to transport listeners to a realm of uninterrupted spirit filled dimension, expressing joy and praise to God.

“Lord I Lift Your Name On High” by Rick Fonds.

This worship song, despite being written over three decades ago, remains a popular worship song with themes of deep exaltation and powerful lyrics that have helped many deepen their faith and express intimacy and submission to God as the almighty. Every 90s kid has sung this both in churches, homes, and Christian gatherings around the world and it still resonates with many in the new generation today.

“God Will Make A Way” by Don Moen

Written by Don Moen in 1993, this is a powerful song born out of grief and loss of a loved one . This song took a spin to strengthen generations with hope and faith, offering believers reassurance of God’s ability to create beauty out of ashes as sighted in Isaiah 43: 19 - Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

“Give Thanks” by Don Moen

Written in 1986 and still giving goosebumps with its powerful flow of lyrics and a blend of deep melodies, this track has over the years been an anthem of gratitude and worship. Every 90s kid and some of the new generation can definitely tell a moment where they all chanted “….let the weak say I am strong, and let the poor say I am rich, because of what the Lord has done for us …..”. This Spirit-packed sensational harmony is in alignment with 1st Thessalonians 5:18 - In everything give thanks.

“For Your Name Is Holy” by Paul Wilbur.

This song was written in the year 1999, and has revealed God’s Holiness in a unique dimension to all listeners. For some, this song has been a catalyst to a realm of total surrender and for others enabled them to grasp a level of spiritual awakening. This song ignites sensations of deep revelations and intimacy - every 90s christian kid can resonate to its message of reverence for the presence of God.

"Thank You Lord" by CalledOut Music

Originally a beloved 90s chorus, Thank You Lord was beautifully reimagined and released by CalledOut Music in 2021. With its soulful simplicity and heartfelt delivery, the track evokes nostalgia, often reminding listeners of early morning family devotions, where gratitude and worship filled the air.
